Stand-up pouches and flat-bottom bags are two of the most popular formats in flexible packaging. Both stand on the shelf, both can be fully printed and both can include zippers, valves and windows. So how do you choose?
What is a stand-up pouch?
A stand-up pouch (also called a doypack) has a folded “W” gusset at the bottom. When filled, the gusset opens and the pouch stands upright. It is lightweight, cost-effective and works well for snacks, nuts, powders, pet treats, candy and small portions of coffee or tea.
What is a flat-bottom bag?
A flat-bottom bag (sometimes called a box pouch or block-bottom bag) has a rectangular base and side gussets, so it stands like a box. It offers five printable panels — front, back, two sides and the bottom — giving your brand more space on the shelf.
Key differences
- Stability: flat-bottom bags are more stable, especially for heavier fills (500g–2kg and above).
- Branding space: flat-bottom bags offer five panels; stand-up pouches offer two main panels.
- Cost: stand-up pouches usually cost less per unit because they use less material and a simpler bag-making process.
- Look: flat-bottom bags give a premium, retail-ready appearance; stand-up pouches are versatile for every price point.
Which should you choose?
- Choose a stand-up pouch for lighter products, sample sizes, snacks and when budget matters most.
- Choose a flat-bottom bag for premium coffee, pet food and larger fill weights where shelf presence is key.
Options for both formats
Both styles can be made with kraft paper, matte or gloss films, aluminum foil or recyclable mono-material structures, and can include a resealable zipper, tear notch, hang hole, clear window or one-way degassing valve.
