More brands want sustainable packaging, but the terms “compostable”, “biodegradable” and “recyclable” are often confused. Here is a simple guide to help you choose the right eco-friendly bag.
Recyclable bags
Recyclable packaging can be collected and processed into new materials. In flexible packaging, the easiest bags to recycle are mono-material structures — for example all-PE (polyethylene) pouches — because they are made from a single type of plastic. Recycling options depend on local collection systems, so check what is accepted in your market.
Compostable bags
Compostable bags are made from materials such as PLA, PBAT or cornstarch blends that break down into water, CO2 and biomass under composting conditions. Look for recognised certifications for industrial or home compostability in your target market before making claims on your packaging.
Biodegradable bags
“Biodegradable” simply means a material can be broken down by microorganisms over time, but it does not specify how long or under what conditions. Many regulators now require more specific claims, so “compostable” with certification is usually a clearer choice.
Recycled-content bags
Bags can also include post-consumer recycled (PCR) material. Standards such as the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) verify recycled content through the supply chain.
Paper-based options
Glassine and kraft paper bags offer plastic-free or reduced-plastic alternatives for apparel, accessories and dry goods.
